Mercorp/Promotora Merhen offers solution for recycling Mercorp/Promotora Merhen is one of the prime suppliers of packaging materials and recycling solutions to major
maquiladoras in the McAllen/Reynosa area. Mercorp began producing packaging material in 1986. The company then ventured into the plastics recycling industry and set up operations to dismantle excess inventory and
re-work finished products. The company's primary area of expertise lies in customized plastic packaging forms and the recycling of thermoplastics. "We also have experience in a broad range of light manufacturing
processes including electrical, plastics, automotive and general assembly and disassembly," said Enrique Castro, owner of Mercorp. With a distribution center in the McAllen/Reynosa area, the company's 4,000
square-foot facility features on-site foam fabricating, producing the custom-designed packaging inserts and shipping cushions that guarantee consumer products arrive at their final destination safely. The company also
inspects and certifies parts and components in a 'just in time' basis before being shipped to its customer. Mercorp supplies high-quality forms into which products from the maquiladora plants can be transported back
in the United States. The firm also handles as many as 600,000 items for disassembly each year, for customers such as TRW and Phillips to maintain a balanced inventory and stock replenishment program. The shipping
foam for the forms utilizes foams made from local recycling of plastic waste generated by the maquiladora industry, turning a major economic and environmental liability into a real asset. In the past four years, the
recycling division of Mercorp has developed processes for creating several engineering plastics from waste or scrap produced by Reynosa plants. As many as 100 tons of plastic are recycled each month by Mercorp at its
plastics facility in Reynosa. This facility was one of the first operations in the area to win certification of full compliance from the Mexican equivalent of the United States' Environmental Protection Agency. |
