Datacom celebrates 20 years as maquila
Special To The Monitor
Datacom de Mexico, located in Parque Industrial Reynosa, is celebrating 20 years as a maquiladora.
The 200,000 square-foot facility provides a wide range of contract manufacturing services including printed circuit boards using surface mount and thru-hole interconnect processes, injection molding, ribbon cartridge winding and assembly, coil winding, wire harness assembly and electro-mechanical assembly.
Datacom is Y2K compliant, ISO-9002 certified and meets all UL/cUL/VDE requirements.
"We are a company with diverse skill sets. We can build anything," said Luis Esparza, manufacturing engineering manager. He explains that the team has acquired experience in being responsive to implementing training programs and production lines for new products.
The maquila-focused corporate strategy enables Datacom to invest over $1 million in new SMT equipment and an additional half a million dollars in process re-engineering, facility renovation and expansion.
In addition, a $2 million investment in technology provides employees, suppliers and customers with a fully integrated ERP business system.
"When we started we had to do everything manually. We didn't even have typewriters!  Now we have the latest hardware and software including a new, high speed LAN and WAN," said Juan Carlos Cabrales, a production superintendent.
Datacom offers daily language classes, bi-cultural seminars, computer training and supervisory skills training in addition to the job related and ISO training programs. The quality training program has improved with the introduction of a six Sigma certification program and SPC training.
"Our employees are receptive to the expanded training programs and enjoy the various opportunities for professional advancement," said Kathi Dufficy, human resources manager.
Datacom now supplies valuable contract manufacturing services to other local maquilas, especially for SMT, injection molded component parts, wire harnesses and other electro-mechanical subassemblies.
With 20 years of experience of manufacturing in Mexico, employees' with diverse skill sets and focused long term strategies all ensure that Datacom is positioned to take advantage of the rapidly growing contract manufacturing industry.
